What is Yoga Therapy?

Although yoga is therapeutic in nature, yoga therapy is very different from a yoga class.

In yoga therapy, the focus is not on a standard method or practice, but on you — your body, your health, your nervous system and your lived experience.

Each session is fully personalized and evolves with you over time.

TKV Desikachar, one of the pioneers of yoga therapy, described it as follows:

"A process of empowerment in which the individual, with the help of a yoga therapist, establishes a personalized and evolving yoga practice that takes the illness into account holistically and aims to reduce suffering and support healing on all levels."

Yoga therapy can be used:

prevention

to support a healing process

to support the management of chronic illnesses or disorders

or to help regulate stress and the nervous system

It is a gentle, non-invasive approach that can be used in addition to any medical or therapeutic follow-up.

Training in yoga therapy requires several years of study in addition to yoga teacher training, with in-depth work on anatomy, physiology, psychology and support for pain, illness and vulnerability.

A Session

A yoga therapy session is a personalized care space, adapted to your body, your emotional state and your moment in life.

We begin with a time for discussion, to understand what brings you here — stress, pain, fatigue, illness, emotional tension or a need to refocus.
From there, I will guide you with the tools of therapeutic yoga: breathing, gentle movements, adapted postures, relaxation, presence and listening to the body.

Each session is different.
It can be very gentle or a little more dynamic, depending on your needs that day. The work is always done with respect for your pace, your limits, and your nervous system.

Yoga therapy can be used to support:

  • stress and anxiety

  • chronic or acute pain

  • fatigue, exhaustion

  • chronic diseases

  • periods of transition, mourning or emotional overload

It is a holistic approach that supports the body, mind and nervous system, and can be practiced in addition to any medical treatment.

The sessions last approximately 60 minutes and take place at Naturôme, in a calm and caring environment, or at home or via video call.
